Join us at America House Lviv for a free workshop on making a personal documentary and using AI video technologies. Together with John Chua, an Assistant Professor of Film and TV at Louisiana State University, we will learn how to use your cell phone to shoot and edit video stories. 

Topics John will cover during the workshop: 

1) How to make a personal documentary:

  • What kind of equipment do we need (minimum is a working mobile phone camera);

  • How to interview;

  • How to best record sound;

  • How to shoot and gather B-roll; 

  • How to shoot with your phone;

  • Types of shots;

  • How to edit;

2) How to use AI in your filmmaking:

  • The importance of AI platforms, like Elevenlabs; 

  • How to use still images to create realistic videos;

  • How to animate pictures and photos;

  • Cloning voices;

  • The danger and weaponization of AI films in disinformation campaigns;

  • Distribution possibilities for your projects. 

At the end of this workshop, attendees will know the techniques and methods for creating projects, using AI to create visual special effects, animated short films, etc.

The workshop will be interesting for:

  • beginners with no filmmaking background who are curious about turning ideas into short videos;

  • young entrepreneurs and activists who want to communicate their ideas, projects, or social initiatives through video;

  • educators and youth workers interested in using AI and video production in educational projects;

  • students from schools, universities, or media programs who want to explore filmmaking without prior experience;

  • teenagers and young adults interested in storytelling, social media, and digital creativity.

Participation requires an intermediate or higher level of English.  

Application deadline is July 1st, 11;59 PM.

All selected participants will receive confirmation letter not later than July 3rd.

About the organizers

John Chua is a US citizen who has worked across the world as a filmmaker, including in London, Los Angeles, and Iraq. He currently works as an Assistant Professor of Film and TV at Louisiana State University. 

In 2022, he was invited by Prince Louis of Luxembourg to train a 15-year-old from Mariupol on the basics of documentary filmmaking. He subsequently produced her short film, which was published by The Independent, included in the UN's Youth Video Festival, and recognized by several film festival. Now John hopes that, by coming to Ukraine to run such workshops, he can help more Ukrainian creators share their stories.
